It's not cheap, but for a Miele it's a good value, and I predict it will last as long as several cheaper vacuum cleaners combined. The air in my apartment feels noticably cleaner after a few weeks (I have wall to wall carpet).

PROS: Very quiet (for a vacuum cleaner). This makes it MUCH more pleasant to use. Very solid build quality. Smaller and lighter, yet far more powerful, than any I've owned. Easier to use than an upgright because you only have to move the hose. Adjustable speed is nice for rugs.

CONS: None really.

Read the fine (or missing) print carefully. This is not a general purpose vacuum purchase. You need to buy the carpet attachment to be able to vacuum carpets (another $100). If you want to return this item, they charge a restocking fee of 10% and also deduct for the shipment (even if you got "free" shipping) AND you pay to ship the thing back. We ended up buying locally from Sears and are much happier with it than from Central Vacuum Stores - which is where the Miele came from.

This is hands-down the BEST handheld vacuum I have EVER tried. And people, I've tried plenty! This thing works like a regular cannister vac, save two exceptions: you carry it, and it does not have a power attachment (Oreck does make one that DOES have a power attachment, so if that's what you want, buy the different vac). No, it doesn't have an "on board tool holder". (Again, Oreck makes one that DOES have a tool holder, but this one doesn't have that feature). Handhelds don't normally come with tools in the first place. The most important thing about this vac is the power. Buddy, does it have some power! I live in dog-hair hell. I have a siberian husky that molts regularly in my home--and I put this vac through the ringer on a regular basis. This little vac sucks up every milimeter of dog hair (and there's TONS of it in my house). It sucks the hair off the hardwoods easily, and even sucks the hair off the area rugs and furniture with nary any fur left behind. I use it to dust my crown molding, my top shelves, you name it. And for my car...wow! It works far better than the car-wash vacuums you pay to use! The way the hose and tools work, you can get into nearly every nook and cranny. I'm just shocked a little 5lb handheld can do this! I love the hose on the front...makes it a lot easier to clean other things---like ceiling fan blades. In fact, this is just perfect for that. The extension tubes and tools allow you to get a perfect angle to suck the scum right off your fan blades! I love the strap on it, it makes using the machine so much more comfortable. I would have never tried this machine, frankly, because of the reviews--which is really too bad. Mine came w/the purchase of my Oreck XL Platinum upright (which is the world's best regular carpet vac for anyone with a dog like mine!). Talk about great BONUS! In fact, I find I use the handheld more than my upright, because it's so powerful. I would only complain about one thing: on this particular model there is no cord keeper. That seemed like a pretty obvious thing to leave out. But that's it. It's easy to use, shockingly powerful and easy to clean. Buy from an Oreck store, and they WILL service your purchase.

For a full size canister vac, this one has very small bags. Compared to my Kenmore (bag type: 5055, or panasonic C-5), the Royal R type used by this machine are less than half the size of kenmore's.

Bags are extremely hard to come by, and where I live (city of 3 million people) they are nowhere to be found. Had to special mail order them. The price of bags is extremely high: $12 for 3 (including filter). It seems it is the only way to order bags: with filter. Kenmore bags cost me $1 for 2 (available at dollar stores!) and the filter is washable.

Do not be fooled by the advertizing: this machine uses HEPA "type" filtration, where "type" is the key word. Inside you will see two filters which need changing every 6-12 months, at least that's what the manual says. They cost the earth, and I found you can just go to home depot, get a filter for over the range vent for 2 bucks for a huge square, cut a piece you need for the vac and save big $.

Suction is OK until the bag gets half filled when it dropps dramatically.

The suction hose is waaaaaaay too long, by at least 2 feet. It tangles and gets in the way.

The lighted power brush attachement lights up the ceiling but not the carpet in front of it.

The power cord that is used to connect the power brush has to be plugged in under the carry handle which totally prevents you from lifting the vac and carrying around, who would design it this way???!?!?!?

Not all attachments fit "on board", the floor brush does not and has to be stored separately.

This machine is also available under the name: Dirt Devil power pak, or Jaguar (do not mistake with the "breeze").

I am dissapointed with the machine and the headache of finding the bags and the rip-off price they cost.

I ordered the upright and received this canister for "free". I even upgraded for $50. The upgrade was a ripoff -- a telescopic wand that's only about 3 feet high and a HEPA filter that I could have bought seperately. First of all, it has no wheels. I didn't think this would be a problem because I often carry my Mini-Mite around, and it comes with a shoulder strap. Well, my whole left arm went to sleep in about 2 seconds and I realized how many times I didn't carry my other one around, and missed the option. The suction is really no better than Eureka Mighty-Mite ($70) and barely better that Eureka Mini-Mite ($40). Oreck should keep their freebies and make their uprights cheaper!

Also, though I like my $500 upright, I should have gotten the $300 one. The only difference is the number of service vists and they push the better but way more expesive bags on you. (the same bags fit ALL models)

Poorly designed, cumbersome, difficult to carry around (even using the strap) and poor suction. I got this as a "freebie" when I bought an Oreck upright, which is an adequate vacuum. Like another reviewer said, Oreck should nix the "freebies" and just make their regular vacuums cheaper. This thing cannot even pick up lint and pet hair. I don't know how it ever supposedly picked up a bowling ball.

This vacuum by far is the best vacuum I have ever owned for under $349. The suction power is bar none the best I have ever utilized and could not believe the amount of dirt I suctioned up out of my carpet fibers. I previously owned the Kenmore Guacomole and Torchlite and neither could come close to the quality and power of this one. I have a buhdist palm statue and this vacuum lifted it off the floor! I have found that bags were hard to find but found an online vendor at reasonable prices. Also the hepa filter is pricy but I substituted with a hepa filter from home depot and cut to size to save big money!!! The attachments work great on unit and my favorite one is the crevice tool for couches and chairs.(My roomate has a dog and it picks up the hair great. The only thing I wish I would have done was to have bought it through amazon. I could have saved over a $100. Highly reccomend for Chicago High Rise condo living as it is also very quiet unit and will not disturb roomates or neighbors.

I am smitten.

We had a Panasonic last us a dozen years, once upon a time, and in the decade since, we've gone through at least half a dozen vacuum cleaners. I've "splurged" on high-end Bissell machines, and I've taken my chances on a $30 clearance-rack machines (the WORST was that Dirt Devil upright...unbelievably loud, smelly, eegads...fortunately it burned out after a mere three months). At best, they've lasted a couple of years, limping along with broken plastic parts for most of that time.

This time around, I thought I'd take the plunge and see if maybe, just maybe, spending REAL money would save in the long run. After a stainless-steel, American-made Metropolitan vacuum arrived with a broken and terribly frail powerhead, I went off to the vacuum superstore and looked at everything else. I made my choice with confidence after the salesman encouraged me to jump up and down on the Miele Leo, stomp and twist the hose, bend the cover over the tool storage compartment, and yank on the retractible cord.

With 11 kids in the house, a dog with long, thick fur, four cats, and various other critters, we are not a lightweight-vacuum household. And even Miele's nozzles are by far the sturdiest I've ever seen.

Moreover, the Leo (I actually got a Gemini, the equivalent model available through Diamond dealers) is exceedingly quiet, it's casters are extremely agile, and every part snaps on soundly and firmly. The bags are thick, quilted things complete with self-closing flaps for clean disposal. The exhaust smells like fresh air. It's not heavy, but it is solid. It just feels like a luxury machine. Even the kids and the husband are smitten with it.

The downside, of course, is price. That S236 Power Nozzle alone costs more than most of the other machines we've owned. A simple upholstery nozzle is an eye-popping $30. I've had to install shelves and hooks in the basement, to keep these treasures stowed in a worthy manner.

But overall, I'm feeling spoiled rotten, with little doubt that this machine will last well past the 10 years I figure it will need to become cost-effective (based on the cumulative price of all those throw-away machine's we've owned). Miele's own philosophy (one I heartily applaud) is that everything they make should last for 20 years. If only more companies would operate on the same principal!

Moreover, the Leo (I actually got a Gemini, the equivalent model available through Diamond dealers) is exceedingly quiet, it’s casters are extremely agile, and every part snaps on soundly and firmly. The bags are thick, quilted things complete with self-closing flaps for clean disposal. The exhaust smells like fresh air. It’s not heavy, but it is solid. It just feels like a luxury machine. Even the kids and the husband are smitten with it.

The downside, of course, is price. That S236 Power Nozzle alone costs more than most of the other machines we’ve owned. A simple upholstery nozzle is an eye-popping $30. I’ve had to install shelves and hooks in the basement, to keep these treasures stowed in a worthy manner.

But overall, I’m feeling spoiled rotten, with little doubt that this machine will last well past the 10 years I figure it will need to become cost-effective (based on the cumulative price of all those throw-away machine’s we’ve owned). Miele’s own philosophy (one I heartily applaud) is that everything they make should last for 20 years. If only more companies would operate on the same principal!

I was disappointed in this machine as soon as I plugged it in. It does not pick up dog hair out of area rugs or carpets. It worked well on hardwoods, but don't waste your money on this machine. The "turbo" nozzle is anything but "turbo". It needs electricity going to it to be effective, the suction just isn't enough as is.

Beware of who you buy from and what their return policies are. Vacuums of America charged me a restocking fee of 15% even though it doesn't state that anywhere on their Amazon pages. They were even aware that it doesn't state that and were willing to not charge me 15% restocking fee if I purchased a different vacuum from them. Shady operation. Now I am going through the Amazon A-Z return guarantee to get the rest of my money back.
